Health Insurance for Truck Drivers and Owner-Operators

Semi trucks driving on a highway through the mountains

Truck drivers spend weeks on the road, often far from home. That makes health insurance trickier than it is for most people. A plan that only works near your home city isn't much help when you're sick in another state.

Company driver or owner-operator?

If you're a company driver, your carrier may offer a group health plan. Compare it carefully, especially if you're adding a spouse or kids.

If you're an owner-operator or independent contractor, you usually aren't covered by the carrier's group plan. You'll need your own coverage, the same as any self-employed worker.

Your coverage options

Plan ahead

It's hard to compare plans from a truck stop. A 15-minute call with Kyle covers your options, and he can check whether your doctors and prescriptions are covered. See how Kyle helps truck drivers and owner-operators.

About private plans: Private health plans are not ACA-compliant major medical plans. Benefits, exclusions, limits and underwriting vary by plan, they may not cover pre-existing conditions or all essential health benefits, and they are not eligible for ACA premium subsidies. Kyle explains exactly what a plan does and does not cover before you decide, and you should read the plan documents.
